ST. PAUL, MN – State Rep. Andrew Falk (DFL – Murdock) took the oath of office today at the state Capitol, beginning his second term serving District 20A in the Minnesota House of Representatives. As Falk began his work in St. Paul, he outlined a few of his highest priorities for the upcoming legislative session: job creation, growing rural economies, and stronger rural communities.
“There is a lot at stake in rural communities this session," said Rep. Falk. “Under Tim Pawlenty our rural hospitals lost millions in state aid, Local Government Aid was slashed, and unemployment reached historic levels. I will do everything I can this session to restore our communities and bring jobs back to rural Minnesota.”
Falk plans to aggressively fight for those priorities as a member of the House Agriculture and Rural Development Policy and Finance Committee. As a farmer and renewable energy developer in Swift County, Rep. Falk understands the challenges facing farming families and small businesses throughout rural Minnesota.
“Agriculture is a significant part of the state’s economy, and our small businesses are the backbone of prosperity in Minnesota,” Falk said
Rep. Falk also highlighted recent deep cuts in Local Government Aid, and their impact on rural communities. Falk said those cuts have squeezed city budgets causing layoffs, increasing property taxes, and reducing essential services for Minnesota residents – particularly in rural parts of the state.
“As we consider ways to balance the state’s $6.2 billion budget shortfall, we have to be careful not to make more drastic cuts to Local Government Aid,” said Rep. Falk. “Deeper LGA cuts will only drive regressive property taxes higher, and reduce the quality of life in rural communities. It’s time for a fair and progressive tax structure that delivers on our responsibility to all Minnesotans.”
In the days and weeks ahead, Rep. Falk will begin his work in legislative committees. Falk will serve this session on the Agriculture and Rural Development Policy and Finance Committee, the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Policy and Finance Committee, and the Veterans Services Division.
Falk encourages all residents of District 20A to contact him throughout the legislative session with any questions, concerns, or suggestions for legislation. Rep. Falk can be reached by phone at (651) 296-4228 or by email at rep.andrew.falk@house.mn.
