ST. PAUL, MN – State Rep. Andrew Falk (DFL – Murdock) is calling on area residents to “Play It Forward". A new effort sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) and the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) is focused on getting Minnesota youngsters involved in band and orchestra. The program would put hundreds, and possibly thousands, of gently used instruments in the hands of kids who need them most.
“Oftentimes the only thing standing between the school band and a child eager to learn is the price tag on an instrument,” said Rep. Falk. “No child should be denied the opportunity to learn and love music simply because a flute, viola, or trombone is financially out of reach. That’s what this creative effort seeks to address.”
Throughout the month of April, MPR and MMEA will be working with local schools to collect as many gently used instruments as possible. Minnesotans are encouraged to donate their used instruments directly to local schools. To participate, local school districts need to:
1. Visit the Play It Forward website at : www.mpr.org/playitforward for more information
2. Agree to accept donated instruments using the simple online form
The program is absolutely free to every school in Minnesota – but the program’s success relies on local schools and area citizens’ participation.
“Filling our schools with the sound of music is a gift for our students that keeps on giving,” said Rep. Falk. “Working together, our community can connect every child with the opportunity to make music a part of their lives.”
