State Rep. Andrew Falk joined members of the House Capital Investment Committee last week at the Minnesota West Community & Technical College in Canby to consider a project for inclusion in the 2010 Bonding Bill.
The college and Canby Public Schools have requested funding for the purchase of a wind turbine, to be erected at the college and used by both parties.
“Currently, students in the wind technical program must travel to the University of Morris for the necessary hands-on experience with wind turbines," said Falk. “Adding a wind turbine will provide multiple effects. In addition to providing a tool for teaching students, it will also provide renewable energy to the college and public school thus reducing costs.”
Even-numbered years in the biennial legislative session are typically devoted to capital investment, or bonding bills. It is expected there may be as many as $3 billion in bonding requests submitted to the committee next year; Governor Pawlenty’s agencies alone have submitted more than $2 billion in requests already. Committee members view the tours as being extremely important to begin setting priorities about which projects may eventually be included in a final bonding bill.
“I am hopeful this proposal will make the final list of bonding projects, strengthening the city of Canby’s role in the development of locally-owned renewable energy, while at the same time creating high-paying, in-demand green jobs,” said Falk.
