LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Anderson


This week legislators are back in their home districts for the Easter legislative recess. I trust everyone had a good Easter last weekend. I wanted to share the results of our 2012 legislative survey with you. As you can see from some of the results that the Legislature is already taking steps to begin repaying the education shift, and providing tax relief to business owners.

1. What is the best way to begin to repay the education shift?
a. Reduce spending in order to grow the surplus: 70.97%
b. Increase taxes: 26.34%

2. The latest state budget forecast calls for a state surplus of $876 million for the 2012-2013 biennium, which is obligated to replenish our budget reserve. If further surpluses ensue, how should that money be used?
a. Put the money in savings to help insulate our state against future downturns and unstable national and global economies: 53.23%
b. Reduce taxes so taxpayers keep more of their money in the future: 40.86%
c. Increase government spending: 4.30%

3. Where is the greatest need for tax reform in Minnesota?
a. Income taxes: 35.48%
b. Property taxes: 63.98%
c. Sales tax: 17.20%

4. Should the governor and the Legislature work to provide greater property tax relief to homeowners and businesses?
a. Yes: 83.87%
b. No: 10.75%

5. Should the governor and the Legislature raise taxes/fees to fund important priorities and programs in the state that have suffered cuts in recent years?
a. Yes: 33.87%
b. No: 60.22%

6. Should the governor and the Legislature hold the line on/reduce spending and keep flat/cut taxes to help grow the economy?
a. Yes: 71.51%
b. No: 22.58%

7. Do you support raising hunting, fishing, and boating license fees?
a. Yes: 57.53%
b. No: 40.86%

8. Should Minnesota focus its transportation spending on a new light rail or new roads and bridges?
a. Light rail: 19.89%
b. Roads and bridges: 76.34%

9. What would be the best way to fund a new stadium for the Vikings?
a. Electronic pull tabs: 20.43%
b. Racino: 22.58%
c. Block E Casino: 26.88%
d. Legacy Amendment funds: 3.76%
e. “Fan” tax applied specifically to goods and services purchased by football fans: 45.70%
f. No public money should be used: 44.9%

10. How should health care be handled in Minnesota?
a. Go along with the federal program (Affordable Care Act – ACA): 20.97%
b. Reject ACA completely: 40.32%
c. Create our own, Minnesota-specific insurance exchange in compliance with ACA: 40.32%
