LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Anderson

The Game and Fish bill passed the House this week with bi-partisan support. A few highlights of this bill include moving the fishing opener this year a week earlier to May 5th so that it does not coincide with the Mother’s Day holiday. The fact that fish are spawning earlier this year it seems everything is ahead of schedule this year. This bill also provides for a wolf hunting season. Up to 400 wolves could be taken and the season would start the same day as deer hunting season this fall. The bill also contains a number of technical provisions regarding beaver dams, hunting a fishing license fees to be paid electronically and wolf hunting fees.

We were at the Capitol until very late Tuesday night discussing the Voter ID bill, it did eventually pass. According to the bill, the question on the ballot in November would be: Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to require all voters to present valid photo identification on Election Day and that the state provide free identification to eligible voters?

I also had a bill that I authored placed in the Education Omnibus bill. It calls for up to one half of the $4 million in new funding for early childhood education to be spent outside the seven county metropolitan area. It's important that we spread that funding around to all parts of Minnesota.

I hope that everyone has a happy Easter. I will be back in the district during the legislative Easter recess. If you would like to meet to discuss any issues please contact my office to schedule an appointment.

Sincerely,

Paul
