LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Anderson

Last Thursday Governor Dayton’s office proclaimed March 29th, 2012 Minnesota Vietnam Veterans Day. I’d like to thank our brave service men and women that sacrificed so much during the Vietnam War. Let us remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to uphold the freedoms we enjoy. We recognize and honor the achievements and bravery of these great men and women.

The State Capitol is in need of comprehensive restoration and repair. A bonding bill has been introduced to renovate the state Capitol building. The bill appropriates $221 million which would provide the financial resources over a four-year period to ensure that the state capitol remains a stable structure in order to conduct the business of the state.

Representative Loon has introduced a bill that clarifies state law regarding the 55-alive program for drivers over age 55. Current law requires auto insurance companies to give a premium discount of at least ten percent to drivers over age 55 who take an initial accident prevention course. The premium reduction can be maintained by taking a shorter "refresher course" every three years.

The permitting bill has passed the House and was in conference committee most of last week, and is now headed to the Governor’s desk to likely be signed today. Through the permitting bill, HF 2095, the state’s environmental review process would help Minnesota businesses and local governments obtain environmental permits from the MPCA and the DNR faster. This will also reduce expenses to those who need permits or those who are in the process of obtaining a permit.

I’d like to congratulate the BBE boys’ basketball team on winning the State Class A basketball championship and finishing the season with an undefeated record. I’d also like to congratulate the Sauk Centre girls basketball team, who finished 2nd in the Class AA basketball tournament.

I will be closing my survey and distributing the results soon. Please participate in the survey if you haven’t already on my legislative website.

Sincerely,

Paul
