SESSION UPDATE

News From Representative Anderson

We’ve had a busy couple weeks here at the Capitol, taking up omnibus bills which are the budget bills to finance each state department. We have also passed budget balancing bills off the House Floor in the last 2 weeks. They include Taxes, Transportation, Agriculture, K-12 Education, Higher Education, Public Safety, Judiciary, Jobs and Economic Development, State Government Finance as well as Health and Human Services bills. These bills will all be heading to conference committees to work out differences with the Senate and Governor Dayton before they will come back for re-passage.

Minnesota’s agricultural industry is an integral component of our state’s economy. The Agriculture bill prioritizes funding to maintain the integrity and safety of the food supply in Minnesota, and minimizes reductions to programs and services that benefit farmers.

Facts of the Bill:
• Reduces Department of Agriculture by 15.2%. Governor Dayton proposed a 14.9% reduction. House GOP reductions include grant programs, value-added products, and marketing and promotion.
• Reduces Board of Animal Health by 5%. (Same as Governor Dayton)
• No reduction in funding to the Agriculture Utilization Research Institute. (Same as Governor Dayton)
• No reduction in funding for retail food handling and meatpacking inspections. (Same as Governor Dayton)
• Provides continued funding and support for agriculture literacy programs, including 4-H, and Future Farmers of America, and grants to industry organizations and groups.
• Provides $15 million for the final ethanol producer deficiency payment in FY12. The bill does not provide or continue state subsidies for ethanol going forward after FY12.
