Representative Paul Anderson Votes in Favor of House Agriculture Finance Bill

St. Paul – Thursday evening the House Agriculture bill was proposed on the House floor and passed with a 104-20 vote.

“Our farmers and agriculture producers play an integral part of Minnesota’s economy. This bill is crafted to benefit our famers as well as give them the tools they need in order to be successful and competitive in the agriculture industry,” said Rep. Paul Anderson.

The bill reduces the Department of Agriculture by 15.2%, while Governor Dayton proposed a 14.9% reduction. House GOP reductions include grant programs, value-added products, and marketing and promotion. It also reduces Board of Animal Health by 5%, which Governor Dayton included in his bill as well.

The budget would not reduce funding to the Agriculture Utilization Research Institute. No reductions would also be seen in funding for retail food handling and meatpacking inspections.

The budget bill also provides continued funding and support for agriculture literacy programs, including 4-H, and Future Farmers of America, and grants to industry organizations and groups.

This bill fulfills the State’s commitment to Ethanol Producers and ends future state subsidies. The bill does provide $15 million for the final ethanol producer deficiency payment in FY12.

Rep. Anderson serves as the Vice-Chair of the House Agriculture Committee.
