NEWS RELEASE

Rep. Paul Anderson Votes in Favor of Phase 1 Budget Bill

St. Paul – On Thursday night the Minnesota House of Representatives passed an early action budget bill, proposed by House Republicans who currently hold the majority. This bill, if passed by the Senate and signed by the Governor, would reduce the state's budget deficit by $1 billion. Under provisions in the bill, Local Government Aid (LGA) for the current year will remain the same as the amount paid in 2010. Many cities and counties had been certified for higher amounts in 2011, and what this bill does is keep the level of local aid equal to last year. At the start of session three and a half weeks ago, a looming $6.2 billion deficit faced the State Legislature. And House Republicans aim to reduce that deficit with this budget bill.

“This bill is one step in reducing the budget deficit. It will reduce the deficit by $1 billion and will also address spending problems that are facing state agencies as well as the state government,” said Rep. Anderson. “Hard-working Minnesotans live by a family budget every day and our state government must learn to do the same.”

The budget deficit totaled $5 billion in 2010 and the beginning of this session legislators are faced with a looming budget deficit of $6.2 billion in 2011. This bill also makes one-time reductions from this year permanent and it also would prevent state agencies from spending unnecessary funds at the end of the year.
