Neighbor-
I just want to pass along a quick update on the capital investment bonding bill which (at last report) borrows around $1.2 billion to pay for various projects throughout the state.
The governor made it clear he was going to veto the bill so the Senate decided to hold back the bill instead of just pushing it along for the veto formality to take place. Now, apparently, some real negotiating is taking place. The governor issued a memo saying he stands by his recommended $685 million bill but is willing to negotiate. Word has it the revised bill will be around $750 million after a bunch of pork projects are eliminated.
If/when a deal is struck, we will have an opportunity to vote on a new bill. This could happen sometime next week. Maybe we finally will get what many of us wanted all along, something that is smaller, more affordable and hones in on the essentials like flood mitigation in the Red River Valley without all the extras like sculpture gardens in Minneapolis. I continue to pursue funding for the expansion of the Pope Douglas Waste to Energy facility in Alexandria. It is a good project and is deserving to be a part of the bonding bill.
This is a fluid situation and I will let you know how things evolve.
Sincerely,
Paul
