Saint Paul, Minnesota – Today, Minnesota Management and Budget released their budget forecast, indicating a $323 million budget surplus for the rest of this biennium.
State Representative John Persell offered the following remarks:
“Reports of a surplus are always welcome. However, we must remember that our state has budget challenges remaining.
“Of the $323 million of available funds, $5 million will be funneled back into our budget reserve, with the remaining $318 million going to schools so we can begin paying back the significant amount of money we borrowed from them. While I’m encouraged that we are beginning to pay back the shift, this $318 million will only account for 11% of what we owe schools, so we still have a long way to go.
“Additionally, the forecast indicates a $1.1 billion deficit for the next budget year. This comes on top of the $2.4 billion dollars we still owe schools.
“Moving forward, we need a sustainable, balanced approach to budgeting in order to get us out of this structural deficit problem."
