Balanced Budget Approach Essential to Economic Prosperity

Saint Paul, Minnesota – Issuing a Minority Report, the Republican majority brought up Governor Dayton’s recent budget compromise for a vote on the House floor today. The compromise was supported by most DFL members, but failed 60 – 73.

Governor Dayton offered a budget compromise on Monday that would make $1.9 billion in cuts and raise $1.8 billion in new revenue by asking the top 2% of Minnesota earners to pay their fair share in taxes. Currently, working and middle-class Minnesotans pay more of their income in state and local taxes than the wealthiest Minnesotans.

State Representative John Persell voted in favor of Governor Dayton’s budget plan and issued the following statement:

“Today, members on both sides of the aisle spoke about the principles that guide us as individuals and as lawmakers. Personally, the principle that guides me is fairness.

Republicans are asking working Minnesotans, seniors, the disabled, students, and farmers to bear the financial burden of balancing the budget by increasing property taxes and tuition, while restricting access to essential services. Governor Dayton is simply asking that the richest 2% in our state pay their fair share.

If you ask me, they may not be the ones who have the money but it’s the hard working people in our state that create the wealth. Former Governor Pawlenty rigidly promoted a no new tax strategy to balance the budget and eight years later what do we have to show for it? A shrinking middle class and property taxes that increased nearly 75% during his governorship. We must act now to build the middle class as they are the true indicator of a fully recovered, healthy economy.

Today I made a choice. I chose to stand with the hard working, middle class that is so vital to the future of our state."
