ST. PAUL, MN – State Representative John Persell voiced his concerns over the impact of Republican budget proposals on working folks and middle class families.
“Balancing the budget is an incredible undertaking," said Persell. “Hard decisions have to be made, but I worry about the burden being placed on the hard working folks I represent.”
According to the Department of Revenue, the proposal put forth by House Republicans to dramatically cut local government aid, would result in a $1.4 billion increase in property taxes for Minnesotans statewide over the next four years.
“We have many folks who are out of work or living paycheck to paycheck,” said Persell. “When combined with increased property taxes, cuts made in the Jobs and Economic Development budget will further the financial burdens on Minnesota families and businesses.”
In the Jobs and Economic Development budget, funding was slashed for programs that support small business development, encourage innovation, and promote new industries. Additionally, many of the budgets released by the Republicans indicate cuts to state agencies that would eliminate existing jobs, and cuts to the Office of Higher Education that may impact local colleges and universities.
“Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College are focal points in our community and region,” stated Persell. “We certainly don’t need more cuts on top of all we are going through right now at BSU and NTC. Though the higher education budget includes tuition caps, options for universities and colleges to absorb these cuts are limited. I am concerned that campuses like Bemidji State University may have to cut more jobs and services in order to make ends meet. That all takes money out of our local and regional economies”
