NEWS RELEASE

REP. DRAZKOWSKI ANNOUNCES ST. CHARLES WILL BE SPARED FROM 2009 UNALLOTMENT

ST. PAUL – Thanks to the persistence of State Representative Steve Drazkowski (R-Wabasha), the City of St. Charles will be held harmless from Governor Pawlenty’s LGA unallotment in 2009.

St. Charles will receive this financial break due to the April fire that destroyed the North Star Foods building. The plant’s temporary closure has forced the City to deal with unanticipated tax and other revenue declines.

“Had Representative Drazkowski not come forward with his appeal and his detailed information regarding this tragedy, this special exemption would not have happened,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Revenue Ward Einess.

“I’m very pleased the Governor realizes just how devastating this fire was to the City of St. Charles and has spared it from LGA cuts,” Drazkowski said. “Unallotment only would have made a bad situation worse.”

Drazkowski noted that St. Charles is the only city in Minnesota with a population of more than 1,000 that will receive zero unallotment. He also said that the unallotment exemption will take place only in 2009 and not 2010, because the Governor expects the full Legislature to provide the City of St. Charles with necessary disaster relief during the 2010 Legislative Session.
