St. Paul, Minnesota – Passed on a party-line vote, the House Republican majority passed HF 2738, adding another constitutional amendment on the 2012 ballot, requiring Minnesotans to show a valid, government-issued photo ID to vote.
Regarding passage of the Voter ID Constitutional Amendment, State Representative Erin Murphy (DFL – St. Paul) issued the following statement:
“The insistence of the GOP majority to prioritize this bill—a bill restricting the voting rights of nearly 80,000 Minnesotans—instead of focusing on getting Minnesota back on track and back to work is indicative of their failure to lead.
“Instead of restricting the rights of seniors, we should be focused on ensuring they have access to quality, affordable health care.
“Instead of disenfranchising the ability of college students to vote, we should be focused on lowering tuition costs, while enhancing classrooms.
“Instead of potentially compromising the rights of those serving overseas to ensure our liberties, we should be focused on supporting their transition home.
“Not only is this bill an affront to the democratic process; it’s the wrong priority for Minnesota."
