State Rep. Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) released the following statement commending President Obama for directing the U.S. Department of Justice to suspend defending the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal ban on recognition of same-sex marriages.
“This is a good day for equality. The Defense of Marriage Act has no place in a country founded on the principle of equality and justice. I am pleased President Obama has taken this appropriate action.
I also extend my gratitude to all Minnesotans and Americans who continue to stand tall for equality. Your collective actions and words continue to play a pivotal role in our pursuit of a country and state that does not judge its people based on their sexual orientation.
Although this is a positive step forward, our work continues. There are hundreds of laws still on the books that discriminate against Minnesotans based on their sexual orientation. This session legislation has been introduced that would repeal equal pay for women. These efforts are patently un-Minnesotan. With compassion and fair-mindedness as our guide, we must continue our work to end discrimination based on sex, gender, race or religion in Minnesota and our nation."
