State Rep. Erin Murphy (DFL - St. Paul) released the following statement following a ruling in Virginia federal court that found elements of the Affordable Care Law to be unconstitutional.
“We should take today’s ruling with a grain of salt. Since the Affordable Care law passed more than 20 different legal challenges have been mounted and 12 have already been dismissed. In two others cases judges upheld the Affordable Care law.
Most importantly, this ruling will not affect the ongoing implementation of the law – which is good news for millions of American families, children, and seniors who are already starting to benefit.
Since the Affordable Care law passed nine months seniors have already taken advantage of lower drug prices, families have the peace of mind their child with a preexisting condition will be covered, and a new patient’s bill of rights has put an end to the worst of insurance company abuses.
Opponents of historically significant legislation brought legal challenges against the Social Security Act, the Civil Rights Act and the Voters Rights Act. With more important work ahead I am confident the Affordable Care law will be upheld by the courts and stand the test of history."
