To the Editor,
Much is at stake this Legislative session for the future of our state and community. Minnesotans everywhere are struggling in the deepest economic recession we have seen in decades and the Legislature must close a $5 billion state budget deficit. There are no silver bullets to address these challenges, but if we are upfront about the difficult choices ahead and seek public input, I am confident we can move forward responsibly.
The major task this session is for the Legislature to pass a balanced budget, and the first step in that process came a few weeks ago with the introduction of the Governor’s Budget. I will be holding a District 64A Legislative Open House on Saturday, February 28th from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. to discuss the Governor’s budget, and get your feedback. The meeting will be at Macalester College, Dayton Campus Center, Davids Lecture Hall, 1550 Summit Ave.
The Legislature is also embarking on bicameral, bipartisan, citizen hearings to gather public testimony and input on our budget. Rather than full committees traveling the state, we will be sending smaller groups to specific areas and traveling together to minimize fuel costs (and emissions). We will hold one of these hearing in St. Paul on Thursday, February 26th at the West Minnehaha Recreation Center, 685 Minnehaha Ave W.
By working together and with your ideas and input, we can solve this budget deficit in a way that reflects the values and priorities of Minnesotans. As always, it’s an honor to serve you in the Legislature.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Rep. Erin Murphy
Saint Paul, District 64A
