ST. PAUL — Today the Republican majority in the Minnesota House of Representatives brought Governor Dayton’s compromise budget plan to a vote on the House floor. Governor Dayton’s plan received strong DFL support
State Representative Linda Slocum (DFL – Richfield/Bloomington) released the following statement on the vote and the governor’s compromise plan:
“Governor Dayton has shown a constant willingness to compromise. He has frequently reached out to the Republican leadership and modified his budget proposal, with his most recent plan being one-half revenue, and one-half cuts. This is what the people of Minnesota expect of us: reasonable discussions, and then sitting down and creating a responsible budget compromise.
“The current Republican budget throws 150,000 people off of their health care, raises property taxes by over $1 billion, raises college tuition by over $200 million, harms our K-12 schools, cuts 30,000 jobs and forces cuts to local services all to protect the wealthiest 2 percent of Minnesotans from contributing to the solution. Those are simply the wrong priorities. The people who have the most can afford to pay their fair share to ensure we have a better Minnesota.
“We are One Minnesota, and we have always been most successful when we have a strong, thriving middle class. We know that cuts need to be made. No one disputes that fact. But any budget solution must require shared sacrifice. Everyone has to do their part. For too long we’ve been balancing the budget on the backs of middle class and working Minnesotans. Governor Dayton’s budget protects our schools, colleges, property taxpayers, and communities while still making tough, but responsible cuts. I’m proud to support Governor Dayton’s compromise budget that will help stop the squeeze on the middle class."
