STATE REPRESENTATIVE LINDA SLOCUM NAMED A ‘CHAMPION FOR RACIAL JUSTICE’ BY THE ORGANIZING APPRENTICESHIP PROJECT

(ST. PAUL) — State Representative Linda Slocum (DFL – Richfield/Bloomington) recently received the “Champion for Racial Justice" award from the Organizing Apprenticeship Project. The Organizing Apprenticeship Project named Rep. Slocum as a champion for racial equity for her efforts in addressing racial equity during the past legislative session.

“In OAP’s 2005-2010 review, we find that leadership on issues of racial equity moved forward even in a bipartisan state government, tough economic times and rapid demographic shifts,” said Jermaine Toney, Author of OAP’s Legislative Report Card. “But let’s be real - more Minnesotans are facing unemployment, foreclosure, hunger and poverty across the state, disproportionately Minnesotans of color. Leadership on racial and economic equity is essential.”

Rep. Slocum was named a champion for sponsoring, co-sponsoring and supporting legislation in 2010 which the report found would have had a positive impact on racial disparities in education, health or the economic status of communities of color. Rep. Slocum was also recognized for continued leadership on race equity and appeared on the multi-year honor roll.

“I look forward to continue working with communities of color in leading for equity and implementing community-created solutions that make Minnesota stronger,” said Rep. Slocum. “While racial disparities are far too prevalent in Minnesota, they need not be permanent. It is important for all of us to look to solutions and to lead for equity and opportunity in our state.”
