Statement on Governor Dayton’s budget proposal

February 16, 2011 (ST. PAUL) — Governor Mark Dayton released his budget proposal yesterday, aiming to erase the state’s $6.2 billion deficit. The governor’s budget included $52 million in new K-12 education funding, with $33 million of that dedicated to funding all-day kindergarten.

State Representative Linda Slocum (DFL – Richfield/Bloomington) released the following statement on the governor’s proposal:

“Governor Dayton repeatedly promised — throughout the campaign and after taking office — that he would increase funding and reform our schools, and yesterday he began fulfilling that promise.

“Education is the key to Minnesota’s future economic prosperity and I’m pleased that the governor understands that. Targeting our investments to early childhood education programs like all-day kindergarten is a great first step in improving Minnesota’s overall education system and ensuring that our children are ready to learn when they step into a classroom.

“Now that the governor has released his budget, I eagerly await the Republican plan so we can all get to work on balancing the budget, improving education, and protecting the middle class."
