The Governor's speech last week was an exercise in missed opportunities and strategic posturing. Instead of leading the way to address the challenges facing Minnesotans today, the State of the State was all about the Governor presenting himself well before the cameras – in St. Cloud. It appears our Governor is more concerned about national eyes that may be looking his way rather than making any real attempt to deal with the genuine problems of Minnesotans. Tough problems like a budget deficit and a worsening economy, a broken health care system and a transportation crisis.
We live in a time and place where the talk of the day should be about new initiatives to spur job growth and boost the state's economy rather than more worn rhetoric backed up with an unproductive veto threat.
Minnesotan's are in need of a plan to fix a budget deficit that is expected to increase from $373 million closer to $800 million by the end of the month. In the past six months we've lost 23,000 jobs and unemployment continues to increase. Jobs are needed and this session we're ready to pass a Capital Investment Bill that will put Minnesotans back to work on important public projects statewide. Jobs are solutions that deliver what Minnesotans need most – work to sustain themselves and their families.
Let's face facts – we're not going fix our problems by continuing to use the state credit card to borrow our way out – look where its gotten us! As we go forward, its worthwhile to remember that Minnesota was built on smart investments, not tax cuts. Minnesota is facing real challenges that can't be conveniently put aside until the next gubernatorial race or remain at the mercy of a veto pen.
