ST. PAUL – The Legislature is in session – and it couldn't have started off any better – at least not according to State Representative Linda Slocum, District 65B. As a former teacher, Rep. Slocum is heartened to see education prominently highlighted in the initial package of bills introduced by the new House Majority. "If we want to ensure the ability of Minnesota children to compete in today's global, knowledge-based economy than some meaningful educational changes need to occur. And these changes will involve having a realizable plan and the financial resources to back it up."
Slocum recognizes that the ability of students to succeed in the future is directly related to the level of knowledge and skills they acquire today. During her first week in office, she chief-authored a bill similar to the K-12 Funding Bill (House File 6), proposing to increase the basic formula by 3% in 2008 and 3% in 2009. The formula allowance would then be $5,123 in 2008 and $5,277 in 2009. The cost of this increase is approximately $450 million over both years.
"We need to fund our school district's inflationary costs and increases on the basic formula allowance to sustain today's students and tomorrow's work force. We must begin to modernize our education funding system - passage of this bill is a small but necessary first step to ensuring our children's futures."
