ST. PAUL – City officials in Bloomington and Richfield are asking for a bigger role in the management of Minneapolis – St. Paul International Airport by seeking seats on the Metropolitan Airports Commission's (MAC) governing board. Legislators recognize the importance of these oversight posts to cities that have been directly affected by airport expansion and runway noise. The unfortunate fact is that Richfield and Bloomington have had no real policymaking influence at the airport.
Representative Linda Slocum, District 63B, is co-author on a bill (HF 0359) to secure posts for Bloomington and Richfield on the MAC governing board. "Our neighborhoods have experienced up close and personal the expansion of the airport and with that the increased air traffic. With the ramped-up noise pollution, of course our cities should have a seat at the table and make our own perspectives heard on airport management decisions."
Legislators and citizens have been motivated by the 2005 construction of the airport's north-south runway that increased jet noise across these communities. "Clearly, adjacent communities are major stakeholders in airport decisions – its time our interests were represented and considered by the Metropolitan Airports Commission," Slocum says.
Slocum says a companion bill is expected in the Senate, and the legislation should go before the Local Government and Metro Affairs Committee shortly.
