Neighbors,
Last Friday I had the opportunity to spend the day at Camp Ripley to attend a Military Action Group meeting. After the meeting, the Commander gave us all a tour. It was a great day!
After sharing the good news of Minnesota’s $1.2 billion surplus, a bill has been drafted to pay back the K-12 school shift that was passed as part of the budget agreement with Governor Dayton in 2011. The bill (HF2083) uses the state’s $1 billion of cash reserves to pay back the entire K-12 shift from 2011, and makes the first repayment of the $2 billion education shift from the legislature in 2010. This plan does what is right for our children, for our schools, and keeps our state in good financial health. HF2083 passed the House floor during yesterday’s floor session.
Next week, I have two bills being heard in House Committees. HF2573 allows spouses and children of fallen peace officers to use money awarded to them in memorial to attend college as an under graduate and/or as a graduate student. The current law only allows these awards to be used for undergraduate studies. HF1821 strengthens requirements for MnDOT for administering the program that provides a bid preference to veteran-owned small businesses (VOSBs) when competing for State-funded construction-related contracts (i.e., those not involving any federal funding). The bill also authorizes counties to create a bid-preference program for veteran-owned small businesses competing for county contracts to provide the county with goods, services, and construction-related work.
Thank you and have a great weekend.
Bob
