February 17 Legislative Update

Neighbors,

It’s been another busy week here in St. Paul. On Wednesday evening, I had the honor of attending the State of the State Address given by Governor Dayton. Governor Dayton’s number one priority for Minnesota this session is job creation, and I look forward to working together with the Governor to make sure that this priority becomes a reality. Growth in the private sector is what I am looking to in order to solve the economic problems facing our state as well as provide relief in taxes and regulation.

On Monday, I attended the University of Minnesota’s President Eric Kaler’s Legislative Reception at his residence and discussed several higher education issues for Minnesota. On Thursday President Kaler spoke on behalf of the University of Minnesota’s bonding request in the Higher Education Committee . I also had the opportunity to meet with local students for Minnesota Career Colleges Day at the Capitol with House Majority Leader Matt Dean.

This week on the House floor the legislature passed HF 1870, which changes the outdated “Last In, First Out” policy for teachers. HF 1870 allows teacher lay-off decisions to include information other than seniority status. This ensures that the best, most effective teachers have a chance to teach our children whether they have been a teacher for one year or for thirty years. Our children deserve a quality education, because there is really no part of our economy that does not depend on a high-quality workforce.

Next week in Transportation Committee I will be presenting HF 1821, a bill that modifies the small business set-aside program changed for veteran-owned small businesses.

Next Tuesday the new senate and house districts will be released to the public.
