February 10 Legislative Update

Neighbors,

Thank you to all who attended the SD 52 precinct caucuses last Tuesday. I had a great time being able to speak with some of you at caucus night and was very happy to see your involvement at the local level. I also attended the State of the City Address in Hugo on Tuesday. Yesterday the House Committee on Higher Education Policy and Finance heard from the University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler. President Kaler discussed the importance of funding and support for the University’s continued success.

Yesterday on the House floor, HF 1766 passed with bipartisan support. HF 1766 prevents union dues from being taken out of child care subsidy payments to daycare providers. Without this, daycare providers who receive state subsidies could be forced into unionization without their consent as union dues could be deducted automatically if any future unionization election is successful. This bill does not prevent anyone from unionizing, but does protect those who prefer to opt-out of unionizing.

Next week, I have two bills being heard in the House Committee on Veteran Services. HF 1452 modifies eligibility for a tax credit for past military service and HF 1820 enacts a military service credit and eliminates income based reduction.

Have a great weekend,

Bob
