February 2 Legislative Update

Friends,

During the past few months, we have been inundated with news stories detailing the caucuses in Iowa and New Hampshire. Minnesota has its own precinct caucus that you can participate in and help make a difference for our state.

This year's precinct caucus is earlier than previous years. Minnesotans from around the state will gather in town halls, schools and community centers on Tuesday, February 7, at 7:00PM to participate in the first step of Minnesota's political process.

Precinct caucuses are held for two main reasons: to elect delegates and alternates who then select party's candidates and to vote on proposed changes to the state party constitution. I believe there is an even more important role in the precinct caucus. It is an opportunity for friends, families and neighbors to come together, share their ideas and be involved in creating a positive future for Minnesota. It will also be an opportunity to have cast your vote in a non-binding election for the presidential candidate of your choice.

If you have never been to a precinct caucus, I encourage you to attend. The process is fairly simple. When you arrive at the precinct caucus, you will sign in. Those organizing the event will then direct you to your specific precinct caucus location in the building. A caucus convener will begin the meeting with some preliminary business and then move to accept nominations for precinct chair. Once the precinct chair is elected, the convener will then ask for nominations for delegates and alternates.

Delegates are people elected at the precinct level who help decide who the party will endorse as well the recommendations for proposed changes to the state party constitution. You can nominate yourself for a delegate position. Once the nominations have closed, caucus attendees will vote and those with the most votes will be elected delegate. Those who are not elected delegate automatically become alternates in descending order for the number of votes they receive. Some caucuses may choose to conduct a separate vote for delegate and a separate vote for alternate. Each precinct will elect an equal number of delegates and alternates.

This simple but important event is critical to Minnesota's democratic election process. You have the ability to get involved and become empowered in setting your party's political agenda for the future. As our state faces many opportunities and challenges in the next year, I strongly encourage you to become involved. Your participation can make a difference in positive change for Minnesota.

Your attendance at your local precinct caucus shows you care about our democratic process and the future leadership of our state. See you on Tuesday, February 7th at 7:00PM

Sincerely,

Bob Dettmer, State Representative Senate District 52A
