January 27 Legislative Update

Greetings from the Capitol!

We began the 2012 Legislative Session this week on Tuesday, January 24th. Thanks to a Legislature that held their ground on no new taxes or spending, Minnesota is beginning the 2012 session with an $876 million state surplus.

The Higher Education Committee, held our first meeting of the session on Thursday. As Vice Chair of this Committee, I can tell you we are looking forward to a positive and productive Committee process this year.

On Sunday, January 22nd I participated in the MCCL March for Life at the Minnesota State Capitol. Many state lawmakers were in attendance as well as members of Minnesota’s Congressional Delegation. It is a great event to come together with others to recognize the sanctity of life. The March for Life happens each year to commemorate the US Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision and it is an important reminder that we must continue to defend the unborn and their right to life.

Next week, I have two bills that will be heard in Veterans Service Division Committee:
- HF 1819 modifies the “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” program by granting civil immunity to anyone who participates in the program.
- HF 1821 changes the set-aside program for veteran owned small businesses, to also include counties.

Thank you for the honor of being your state representative.

Sincerely,

Bob
