Session Update

As I mentioned last week, I retired from the U.S. military after twenty-five years of service to this great nation. What I did not know however, is that my twin sons and daughter had quite a few surprises in store for my wife and me. First being that my son, Maj. Rob Dettmer and his family flew up from Texas to join the festivities, my daughter and granddaughter also flew up to surprise me. Most remarkably, we were able to video chat, live, with our son Maj. Travis Dettmer who is currently serving in Afghanistan. Having my entire family together on this momentous day meant a great deal to me. I am honored to part of the proud, valiant and heroic history of our armed forces.

I would like to share with all of you a very important piece of legislation that I have been working on. House File 998 would make human cloning illegal. The bill makes human cloning punishable by misdemeanor and also makes it illegal to knowingly import an embryo produced by human cloning. Human life must be respected and honored, not treated as material for scientific experimentation. With the support of the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life organization, I have carefully drafted this legislation to protect life while not prohibiting agriculture research dealing with the cloning of plants, animals or adult stem cell research. In 2009, we passed a ban on taxpayer funding of human cloning which Gov. Pawlenty signed into law, but the ban will need to be re-authorized in 2011 unless cloning is banned outright. As always I will continue to defend life at all stages and protect the sanctity of human life. The bill has moved through the Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance Committee, Judiciary Policy and Finance Committee and is awaiting its hearing in Health and Human Services Finance Committee.
