RESPONDING TO GOVERNOR DAYTON'S STATE OF THE STATE

This week has brought many exciting moments here at the Capitol. From legislation to Governor Dayton’s State of the State address, it has been a week full of progress.

As I mentioned last week, I have authored a bill, House File 82, which allows an income tax subtraction for military retirement pay, including survivors’ benefit plan payments. Minnesota is currently one of six states that still taxes military pensions. This bill is now waiting to be heard by the Taxes Committee. I look forward to bringing this bill to the House floor for a vote so we can continue to honor Minnesota’s Veterans.

I had the pleasure of doing a judicial ride along in the Washington County Courthouse where I toured and met with officials. I listened as Judge Susan Miles and Deputy Court Administrator Wayne Minske explained the innovations and cost saving measures that the county has undertaken. While on my visit I also saw the remarkable use of technology and observed the Pretrial Calendar with Judge Schurrer. It was a wonderful way to experience such an important part of our community.

Governor Dayton gave his State of the State address this Wednesday. While it was wonderful to come together and partake in such a grand and long-standing tradition, I believe the Governor has once again missed the mark. Minnesota need government to live within its means, not spends money it does not have. We cannot saddle our children and grandchild with massive amounts of debt. If Minnesota is to build a stable and lasting economy we must allow businesses to flourish, and empower communities to build their own futures. Governor Dayton spent much of his speech talking about “investing” in your future, but he simply means spending and higher taxes. Instead, we can invest through empowerment--empowerment of teachers, of schools and of businesses to take the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit of Minnesota and create real, lasting prosperity in our wonderful state.

Thank you for the honor and privilege of being your state representative.
