ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT MUST BE READY TO CREATE JOBS
With the 2011 Legislative Session underway, the challenges facing Minnesota provide the opportunity for great improvements in how our state is run. Government is realizing what families realized long ago—in order to be stable, prosperous and healthy it must live within its means. For too long government has grown and spent with little regard for the consequences. These tough economic times are calling for us to come together, set priorities and move forward in a way that will leave a bright future for our children.
No one can deny that this economic climate has put a strain on our community’s families. That is why we must take swift action to address the state’s budget and start creating an environment of opportunity for businesses. This week the House Republicans introduced an Early Action Budget bill that looks to fix the state budget responsibly and efficiently. We cannot waste time on party politics while families struggle.
For too long government has been able to spend what it wants without showing the tax payer just how their hard earned dollars are spent. By having accountability we can make smart decisions that will start to create the environment that businesses need in order to grow and get people back to work. Our community has an unparalleled work ethic and spirit of ingenuity that can propel Minnesota into prosperity if the government gets out of the way of business and starts spending tax dollars dutifully.
We aim to make the one time-reductions from 2010 permanent which would reduce the deficit by removing $840 million of automatic increases set for next year. Additionally, it is a priority that K-12 education, special education and colleges and universities not be reduced. Redesigning how government spends your money does not mean we will change our priorities for a healthy, well educated, strong and stable community.
Our community has a vibrant history of pushing forward in challenging times. We must once again make the choices that put people first—not government spending.
