DETTMER AWARDED FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION LEGISLATION
ST. PAUL – State Rep. Bob Dettmer, R-Forest Lake, earned an award for his efforts to improve the physical well-being of Minnesota’s youth.
In the 2010 legislative session, Dettmer successfully passed legislation helping Minnesota to adopt standards developed by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
Dettmer was a teacher and wrestling coach in Forest Lake for more than 30 years. He said societal changes over the decades have placed increased importance on promoting active lifestyles for our youth.
“We need to find a ways of countering the negative physical impacts from our children spending more time in front of video screens and eating fast food more than ever,” Dettmer said. “Reports show almost 70 percent of American adults are overweight and we can improve upon that statistic by reaching people when they are young, teaching our children to live healthy and active lifestyles. This legislation was a nice step in that direction and I'm honored to receive this award.”
Dettmer received the award from the Minnesota Association Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, which promotes health and physical education policies for our schools. MNAHPERD is a school-based professional association that provides professional services and resources for teachers, organizations, and individuals who provide quality programs. The organization is dedicated to improving the skills, knowledge, health, and well-being of all Minnesota students.
