Correcting the mistakes made to Green Acres is one of the big discussions at the Capitol currently. A few weeks back I informed you about an attempt I supported to repeal the Green Acres changes. That proposal is working through the committee process currently.
I have heard from many constituents who will be impacted by these changes. Many cities have also contacted me and urged me to support these changes. I fully support these changes and have introduced legislation that would repeal them.
I have also introduced legislation that would change the way the Green Acres program works. One of the changes in my proposed legislation would allow property owners to withdraw some of their land from Green Acres without withdrawing all of their property. This would give landowners more control over the status of their property.
Another provision that I’ve offered is to allow land to be transferred to immediate family members without having it removed from the Green Acres program. This provision would allow family farms to be passed on to the next generation without creating more burden or paperwork for the family.
In an attempt to allow people the ability to make changes to their land, I’ve also added language to my bill that would allow property classified as rural vacant land to be withdrawn from Green Acres with no back taxes due if the property isn’t sold within three years. Because sometimes people change their mind, it’s important to have this portion in the law.
This legislation was heard in committee and it may be included in the final omnibus bill. In the meantime there has still been no action taken to correct the mistakes made last year. I am hopeful we can make some of the necessary changes soon in order to keep this program working effectively and efficiently.
