Last year there were changes made to the Green Acres program that many people in our district are a part of. The effects of these changes have seen some people’s property tax bills jump drastically. I have offered legislation that would correct this problem, and am happy to support attempts by other members to do the same.
The legislation makes three major changes to the Green Acres program: repeals the new “rural vacant land” classification; repeals the property tax look-back from seven years back to three when there is a title change; and reinstates the grandfather clause that allows property owners to pass on land included in the Green Acres program without a tax reassessment.
This week House Republicans worked to fix what was broken last year. We wanted to help the many people who were having sleepless nights wondering how they were going to pay an extra $15,000, $45,000, or more. The legislature should admit our mistake and work with a sense of urgency to fix the wrong. I was disappointed the Majority would not allow our legislation to fix this problem.
However, that set back will not signal the end of the road to fix this wrong. I am committed to working, in a bi-partisan fashion, to make sure the Legislature fixes this problem. We need to make sure our citizens are not faced with an additional property tax burden because the Legislature failed to fix its own mistake.
