STATE OF THE STATE SHINES WITH OPPORTUNITIES

By Bob Dettmer
State Representative
District 52A

One of the great honors and privileges of serving in the House of Representatives is to witness the State of the State address given by our Governor each year. While the current state of our state looks bleak I can see the sunshine on the horizon and the promise of better days that lie ahead.

Traveling through these tough economic times requires us to get creative and to find ways to reform the way government works. In his State of the State address Governor Pawlenty unveiled a few reforms that I believe are especially good.

Bringing more jobs to Minnesota will help turn our economy around. Currently we have the third highest business tax rate in the world. In order to encourage job growth and to get new businesses into Minnesota the Governor proposed the Minnesota Jobs Recovery Act. It would cut the tax rate for businesses by half and would make it easier for businesses to create jobs in Minnesota.

He also proposed tax credits for small business owners. There are many small business owners throughout our state. By helping them re-invest in their business with this tax credit we can create more jobs and add to our local economies. When our local Main Street businesses can flourish our local communities benefit.

A strong educational system is also part of the plan to help our state. The Teaching Transformation Act proposed by the Governor will help us to recruit the best and brightest teachers to our state. Part of the proposal also works to get results from our schools. Just like everyone else has to produce results, our schools should do the same. By bringing in some of the best teachers around we can encourage and prepare our students with a world class education that will help them compete in the world market place.

As we move forward this legislative session I encourage legislators on both sides of the aisle to have an open and honest debate on how to solve these issues. I believe we can work together and make some of our Governor’s ideas part of the final solution.
