WE WILL NEVER FORGET

By Bob Dettmer
State Representative
District 52A

I have always held our nations Veterans in high regard, and I know many of you do as well. These are the brave men and women who have honorably served our nation, fought to defend our freedoms, and have witnessed their friends pay the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

That is why I always take great pride in being able to give honor where honor is due, and recognize the many great people and groups that work to make sure our veterans are honored. The Honor Flight Network is one such group that works to honor our veterans, especially our aging World War II veterans.

Honor Flight was started in 2005 by a man named Earl Morse, who is a Physician Assistant and Retired Air Force Captain. Mr. Morse had several patients that were WWII veterans, many of whom dreamt of visiting the WWII memorial but did not have the means to travel on their own. Mr. Morse asked pilots in his local aero club to help him make this dream a reality by flying veterans to Washington DC free of charge and personally taking them to see the memorial.

The first Honor Flight occurred in May of 2005 with 12 veterans on six small planes flying to DC and visiting the WWII memorial. Since then nearly 900 veterans from across the country have taken part in the Honor Flight program.

The Honor Flight program came to the Twin Cities on September 13. There were 95 veterans from the Twin Cities area that boarded a charter flight from Minneapolis to Washington DC to visit the memorial. Upon their return to Minneapolis we had a great celebration for our veterans thanking them for their service.

As a Veteran myself, and having two boys who have served in Iraq, I personally know and understand the great sacrifice these men and women have given to our country. If you would like more information or would like to support the great efforts of Honor Flight you can learn more about them online at www.honorflight.org.
