EVERYONE DESERVES PROPERTY TAX RELIEF

By Bob Dettmer
State Representative
District 52A

When property taxes skyrocket, as they have the last several years, it hits every homeowner. Because of this, it makes sense to provide property tax relief to everyone paying the property tax bill – not just a small fraction.

That is not the case, however, under the plan that passed in the House last week. The Democrat’s plan would only provide property tax relief to approximately one-third of Minnesotans. Not only do the other two-thirds of Minnesotans not get any relief at all, they will end up paying more under this system! I could not support this bill knowing how it would adversely affect the homeowners in our community.

The House Republicans and the Governor have put forth a plan that would bring true property tax relief to all Minnesotans. In fact, it would place a cap on property taxes all together. A cap on property taxes is the only way to keep them down. That has been proven across the nation.

Over 30 other states in our country have some variation of a property tax cap. It works well in those states, and it keeps property taxes at a reasonable level. A cap would provide the relief that is desperately needed and it would benefit everyone equally.

After years of lip service the legislature owes it to the citizens of our state to provide meaningful property tax relief. Instead of putting this issue off yet another year let’s settle it this session.

Let’s provide property tax relief for all Minnesotans.
