State Representative
District 52A
This week the House of Representatives passed a bonding bill that puts approximately $960 million on the credit card of our state. Bonding bills usually include things that are necessary for the state. To me this should mean the things in our bonding bill are priorities.
The lack of priorities in the bonding bill is why I voted against it. I, along with my Republican Colleagues, tried to bring the focus of the bill back to priorities. We offered numerous amendments that would have taken money from things like guerilla exhibits, hockey rinks, and arts and used that money to provide for education, roads and bridges, and public safety.
I voted against the education bill last year because it did a poor job of solving the funding equity of our schools. One amendment offered by House Republican Leader Marty Seifert would have put $11 million into our schools instead of giving it to zoos. To me the future of our children is a higher priority than a zoo.
This bill will be vetoed by Governor Pawlenty, as it should. We need to bring the over all amount of the bill down. Our state, just like our families, should not max out the credit card just because they can. We should limit our spending to what benefits our state.
