By Bob Dettmer
State Representative
District 52A
In a few days the Minnesota State Legislature will reconvene to finish its work for the biennium. Session during the even numbered years is usually when the Legislature passes a bonding bill, which is typically used to make infrastructure improvements around the state.
The bonding bill is the main bill that will be debated this year. The governor has proposed spending approximately 38% of the bonding bill on transportation projects. I whole-heartedly agree that fixing our roads and bridges should be the main priority for this coming session. We should put our investment dollars into the investment that currently needs it the most: our roads and bridges.
Combating the rising problems of illegal immigration will also be a topic of debate this year around the Capitol. Recently the Governor proposed some new initiatives that will help Minnesota deal with illegal immigration. Minnesota needs to take a stronger stand against illegal immigration as it undermines our rule of law. The safety of our families and communities are also in jeopardy unless we can end the practices of sanctuary cities that Minneapolis and St. Paul have become.
Through our time in St. Paul we must not forget that we represent the people of Minnesota. With many people worried about the state of our economy, we must ensure we do not pass any tax increases that would further hurt our economy. The legislature needs to make sure we can balance the budget of the state by tighten the belt and encouraging job creators to come into the state. After all, it’s the job creators that put the money into your wallet, not the government.
As we move into the legislative session I would encourage you to contact me on any legislative issues or questions you may have. You can reach me at rep.bob.dettmer@house.mn or 651.296.4124.
