EMAIL UPDATE

Greetings Friends,

With the last weekend of session nearly upon us, I wanted to give you
an update as to what may happen this weekend. Many long nights lie
ahead as we look to reach a budget agreement between the House, Senate,
and the Governor.

Unfortunately, much of this will be done out of the public eye in the
dark of night. Under the leadership of DFL majority, we have been
working for 6 months on crafting budget bills and building our state
budget for the next two years to send to the Governor. As you may know,
Governor Pawlenty has vetoed nearly all major spending bills and has
threatened to veto more. In short these bills have spent too much
money, focused on the wrong priorities, raised taxes, raised fees,
contained "poison-pill" policy changes, and have done little to
provide Minnesotans with meaningful property tax relief or move our
state forward.

As of now, there has been little movement towards reaching a reasonable
compromise and keeping our state spending within the means of our $2.2
billion dollar surplus. With four days remaining until the
constitutional deadline for adjournment of the legislature, a final deal
on a reasonable budget still seems elusive. The legislature should
finish its work on time, and we should present the state of Minnesota
with a balanced and fair budget.

It is time for the partisanship, stubbornness, and political
gamesmanship of the Democratic-led House and Senate to end. The bottom
line is our state has a $2.2 billion dollar budget surplus. Our
expected state budget will be $34 billion dollars. This amount is more
than sufficient to fund our state's priorities. It is time to get the
deal done.

Have a great weekend!

Bob

P.S. - In the next update, I will hopefully be able to provide a
summary of the final bills as the dust settles on this session.
