SESSION MIDPOINT REVIEW

By Bob Dettmer
State Representative

As the mid point of the session has recently past I want to give you an update of what I am doing for you. This year I have chief authored 11 bills so far, and I am happy to report that many of them have been included in the omnibus bills.

One of the bills that I authored, HF 1125, and has been included in the taxes omnibus bill, would provide property tax relief to organizations such as the American Legion and the V.F.W. This bill would reclassify their property making them eligible for a 30% tax break, as long as they donate 100% of their property tax back to their local communities. These organizations do many great things for our communities and this is just one small way we can show them our support.

Another bill that I co-authored, HF 420, has made it into the education omnibus bill. That bill would require physical education standards in school. As a physical education teacher I know the importance of making sure our kids are active. If they learn and implement a healthy life style while they are still in high school, they will be more likely to lead healthy lives as adults.

A third bill, HF 1914 I offered that would prohibit toll roads from being built in Minnesota was included in the transportation funding bill. That bill passed the house floor in March. There will be a conference committee for the House and Senate to work out the differences in the bills, and I am hopeful my bill will be included in the final version.

However, not all of my bills were as well received. I am disappointed that HF 2029, which I offered and would have increased the per pupil funding formula for all school districts did not receive a hearing this session. I will continue to fight for fair and equitable funding for our local schools, and will push this bill again next session.

It has been a busy session so far, and it will only get busier. However, I will continue, as always, to listen to you on any issue. I would encourage you to contact me with any of your concerns. I may be reached at rep.bob.dettmer@house.mn or 651.296.4124. Mail should be sent to Rep. Bob Dettmer, 329 State Office Building, 100 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155.
