To the Editor:
This week at the State Capitol a controversy has flared up over the Minnesota State High School League’s recent decision regarding rules for open enrollment and transfer of high school athletes. The High School League’s decision was based upon 18 months of testimony, meetings, and research. This rule change was unanimously adopted by the League’s Representative Assembly. I want to make it clear that I am fully supportive of the High School League’s decision. I believe that it will help clarify the transfer rules for high school athletes and parents, and work to benefit high school athletics.
Unfortunately, some legislators have proposed bills that would overrule this decision. All the work of the High School League and the input from coaches, parents, and students would simply be ignored. Current state law gives the authority to regulate extracurricular activities to the State High School League, and this should not be changed. It should not be the role of the legislature to overrule a representative body such as the High School League, and I will be working to stop any efforts to do so.
