WORK BEGINS ON A STATE BUDGET
During his State of the State address, the Governor said “Minnesota government should stop paying for good intentions and start paying for better performance.” I think this goal is tremendous, and hope we can work together to make state government more effective and more efficient.
Last week Governor Pawlenty unveiled his state budget proposal. The Governor’s budget reflects this goal by rewarding performance in health care, education, and higher education. Over half of the new spending proposed in the Governor’s budget is devoted to education. We must make the most of these dollars to ensure our children are prepared for the challenges ahead.
To honor veterans and members of our military, the Governor proposed a $75 million package of tax relief and benefits. As a member of the Army Reserve and as the father of a son serving in Baghdad right now, I know that this show of support will be greatly appreciated by military families.
Lastly, the Governor’s budget contains $281 million in tax relief for Minnesota’s taxpayers, including $150 million in property tax relief and $70 million in income tax relief. In light of our budget surplus, this is a good start and I hope we can do more for Minnesota’s taxpayers.
