St. Paul - Today the House and Senate convened in House chambers for Governor Pawlenty’s annual State of the State Address. The Governor’s remarks focused on four key areas of improvement: better government, better energy, better education, and better health care.
“Governor Pawlenty’s message was terrific,” State Representative Bob Dettmer said. “We are blessed to have such a wonderful state, but we will keep striving to raise the bar in these strategic areas while living within our means.”
“The Governor’s message of accountability - particularly in state government and in our schools - is very important. I’m very excited to learn much more about the new ‘Successful Schools’ initiative the Governor previewed in the address.” This initiative will provide “bonus” funding to schools based on performance. “Our schools and kids deserve the best and this innovative program strives towards making our schools even better.”
Noting that a vibrant economy benefits every Minnesotan, Dettmer emphasized that state government must live within its means. “Responsible spending and accountability are needed to keep our state strong and fiscally sound. We are fortunate to have a surplus this year, and I agree with the Governor that we should provide property tax relief and tax relief for veterans.”
Governor Pawlenty is expected to deliver his budget to the legislature next week.
