Dear Editor:
The 2008 Legislative Session convened, giving Fridley residents the green light to build a station on the Northstar Corridor – one of the fastest growing transportation corridors in Minnesota and the nation. The Omnibus Tax Bill extends a sales tax exemption to provide $8.5 million for the Northstar commuter rail line that will help ensure Fridley gets a station. Additional legislation in the Tax Bill directs funds for Fridley to develop land around the station.
Rep. Carolyn Laine and I worked together to carry these important pieces of legislation for our communities and I was fortunate to serve as a member of the House Tax Committee to oversee these bills through the legislative process. We were motivated by the facts – population, housing and business growth in the Northstar Corridor is overwhelming the existing transportation system. Residents and businesses are feeling overwhelmed by traffic congestion that impedes commerce and increasing travel times and expenses daily. Transit alternatives like the Northstar commuter rail line are golden opportunities for today's commuters who are asking legislators for solutions to our transportation problems.
We are honored to represent our communities' transportation needs and be a part of solutions that will soon bring relief to commuters.
Sincerely,
Tom Tillberry
