Dear Editor,
It's hard to believe the 2008 legislative session is less than two months old. Already, we have passed significant legislation responding to the pressing needs facing our state.
The current economic slowdown has hit Minnesota hard with over 25,000 lost jobs since last summer. That's why we moved quickly to pass a job-focused Capital Investment bill that emphasizes projects that are ready-to-go. Our balanced proposal will create 10,000 good-paying jobs throughout Minnesota. Much needed funding for the Fridley Springbrook Nature Center was included in our bill.
We acted responsibly to deliver our most significant transportation package in twenty years in order to ease traffic congestion, improve the safety of our roads, and fix our state's most unsafe bridges. Over the next five years, our bill will create over 30,000 jobs per year in our slumping construction sector.
We passed an I-35W Survivors Compensation Fund bill to provide needed relief to survivors of the tragedy and several significant bills to address the pervasive home foreclosure crisis.
Our first two months have been highlighted by responsive, responsible action, but that there is still important work ahead. We must balance our state budget and still far too many Minnesotans lack quality health care. I will continue working toward a responsible budget solution that does not cut funding to our most vulnerable citizens. We will also continue working toward meaningful health care reforms secure quality and affordable health care coverage for more Minnesotans.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Laine
State Representative, 50A
