Koryne Horbal

It was my pleasure to attend a recent event where the first “Koryne Horbal Fearless Award" was presented to Coleen Rowley. Coleen was honored for her integrity and fearless courage in addressing needed changes at the FBI.

It is an even greater personal pleasure that Koryne Horbal is my friend and neighbor; Koryne resides right here in Columbia Heights. She continues to be a remarkable asset wherever she sets forth with her dynamic vision and fearless force. Koryne has served us nationally as the fifth Ambassador to the United Nations and by being a key proponent in the establishment of Title IX which opened competitive school sports to girls.

Of the myriad ways Koryne has served in Minnesota, many of her endeavors have forged a way for woman to be fully active in civic life and the elective process. She was the first woman chair of the DFL party, and she has continuously strived within the DFL for equal participation by women. What so many of us take for granted today actually exists because of her tireless leadership.

Rep. Kate Knuth (DFL 50B) was also honored at this event with the “Rising Star” award. As one of the most youthful legislators in the Minnesota House today, Kate has shown effective leadership, especially regarding environmental concerns. Kate and I are both indebted to Koryne for clearing the path for our journeys of service. Thank you, Koryne; and may we also thank you with our own service as fearless as yours.
