Dear Editor:
During the coming year, nearly 3,000 women and men currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will be returning home to Minnesota. We pursued worthwhile initiatives at the Capitol to help returning service men and women re-adjust to civilian life, as well as continue their education and professional development. Now what will be most needed is for all of us to listen to the voices of our veterans as they share experiences most of us will never have first-hand knowledge of beyond waiting for our loved ones to return home.
The Humphrey Institute's Center for Democracy and Citizenship, working with the Minnesota National Guard and a statewide coalition of individuals and organizations, has created the Warrior to Citizen Campaign. This grassroots campaign is intended to support community efforts to welcome home our citizen soldiers and provide ongoing support to soldiers as they make the transition from military to civic life. More information can be found at www.publicwork.org.
Over the coming months, I look forward to working with the Warrior Citizen Campaign in our local communities to help our service men and women return to their civilian lives as well as continue their education and professional development. I encourage all Minnesotans to participate in this important community initiative. Working together, we can bring our soldiers all the way home.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Laine
