Dear Editor:
I am boycotting the state cafeterias in the Capitol complex to protest the recent transfer of management by the Pawlenty administration to Taher Inc., the food service company that narrowly won the contract over the previous provider, Aramark. Taher refuses to recognize the union that has represented the cafeteria workers. Long-time state cafeteria workers have lost their jobs; and new non-union employees have been given only part-time work with no benefits.
Recently I signed a petition to not eat at the Capitol until Taher, Inc. reconsiders their labor practices and extends full time positions with appropriate benefits to their workers. Many of the patrons of the state cafeterias are lawmakers and lobbyists who work on behalf of working families. To patronize an establishment that does not provide its workers with living wages and benefits is contrary to who and what we represent. Please join me in this boycott and contact Bruce Taher (phone: 952-945-0505; E-mail: b.taher@taher.com) and tell him to rehire all former cafeteria workers and adopt the union contract.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Laine
